Pairings Set For 1-A Women’s Tennis Finals; Bridges, Honeycutt Sharp In 2-A Singles

Championship Pairings Set In NCHSAA 1-A Women’s Tennis

            CARY—Morgan Auger of Kernersville Bishop McGuinness and Julissa Quintanilla of North Duplin won their way into the singles championship match with two wins apiece on Friday in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 1-A women’s tennis championships at the Cary Tennis Center.

            Auger did not lose a single game en route to a pair of straight set victories while Quintanilla also won in straight sets, none of which was closer than 6-2.

             A doubles team from Misenheimer Gray Stone Day has won the last two 1-A championships, and Brooke Herlocker has been a part of both of those titles. This year she is teaming with Meghan Hedgepeth as the Gray Stone Day pair seeks the school’s third consecutive doubles title, and Herlocker and Hedgepeth have made it to the finals.

            The Gray Stone Day pair will face Courtney Mudge and Marisa Deininger of Community School of Davidson for the doubles title.

            Championship matches start at nine o’clock Saturday morning.

NCHSAA 2-A WOMEN’S TENNIS

Bridges, Honeycutt Impressive In Singles In NCHSAA Women’s 2-A Tennis

          CARY– Shelby’s Nancy Bridges, the 2013 state 2-A singles runner-up and state champion two years ago, marched into the semifinals with a pair of victories in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 2-A women’s tennis championships on Friday at the Cary Tennis Center.

          Bridges won both of her matches in straight sets and lost only a single game on the day. She will face Salisbury’s Kayla Honeycutt in one Saturday semifinal after Honeycutt was equally impressive, losing only one game in four sets.

           Caroline Cowan of Kill Devil Hills First Flight, who won a marathon three-set match in the quarterfinals over Olivia Varner of West Davidson, plays Carrboro’s Jessica Ille in the other singles semifinal.

          The doubles team of Hannah Archer and Olivia Archer of Lake Norman Charter was also dominant, winning both of its Friday matches in straight sets at love to move into the semifinals. The Lake Norman Charter duo will play Grace Steinman and Kathryn Rusher of Salisbury, while Caroline Smith and Haley Beamon (Wilson Beddingfield) tangle with Lydia Yuan and Sara Yuan (Durham North Carolina School Science & Math) in semifinal action.

            Semifinals start at nine o’clock Saturday morning.
