Wedding At Midfield At Swain County High School?

BRYSON CITY— It may not be unprecedented, but nobody can remember this happening before at a North Carolina high school football game.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reports that a wedding—yes, a wedding—occurred at midfield after Swain County High School’s football game last Friday.

Swain County assistant football coach Ian Roper was married last week on the field after a 56-36 win over Rosman.

According to the Citizen-Times, the ceremony was a surprise hatched by his wife, Robin. She arrived in a black limousine that pulled up on the track surrounding Boyce Deitz Field at Swain after the contest ended.

The witnesses for the wedding included Swain County cheerleaders and players who were still in uniform. The ceremony occurred just after the final regular season home game for the Maroon Devils.

The couple had planned to marry in December, but the venue where the wedding was to be held wound up falling through.

Roper previously served as the athletic director at Cherokee.
