Each week two athletes in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association are selected for the Performance of the Week Award, Powered by OrthoCarolina. These athletes are nominated by coaches, media and school administrators for their outstanding performance.
The OrthoCarolina Performers of the Week for week five of the NCHSAA competition are Mackenzie Walser from West Davidson High School and NyDarion Blackwell from Clinton High School.
Walser, a junior setter at West Davidson, recorded 41 assists in two games last week pushing her over 1,000 assists for her career as a Dragon. In the two wins, she added 8 aces and 10 kills.
For the season Walser leads the Dragons in assists (215) and service aces 36. She is also 2nd on the team in digs (149) and 3rd in kills (73). This season West is 11-4 overall and 6-0 in the CCC as the two time defending conference champs.
Blackwell, a junior quarterback for the Darkhorses, went 12-for-19 for 247 yards and four touchdowns as Clinton topped Princeton 41-14 on Friday night. Blackwell has thrown for 642 yards and six TDs so far this season.
Clinton is now 5-0 on the year, and the top ranked 2A team on Maxpreps and second in the 910 Area Code Rankings from High School OT.
