CHAPEL HILL—Que Tucker has been named interim commissioner of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, to step in after current commissioner Davis Whitfield leaves the position.
The Executive Committee recommended to the Board of Directors that Tucker be appointed starting June 1, prior to Whitfield’s departure to become chief operating officer of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) in Indianapolis at the end of June. The interim appointment will run through May 31, 2016. The Board approved the recommendation unanimously.
Dr. Bill Miller, president of the NCHSAA and superintendent of the Polk County schools, noted it would give the Board time to develop timelines and the appropriate process for going forward to fill the position on a permanent basis.
Tucker has been serving as deputy commissioner and was elevated to the deputy’s role in January of ’05, where she has been responsible for overseeing the NCHSAA’s 23-sport program.
A native of Rockingham County, Tucker came to the Association in 1991 after a stint as an assistant coach for the North Carolina State University women's basketball program, where she worked under storied head coach Kay Yow. Among her duties there was to oversee the team's academic progress.
Prior to her entering the collegiate ranks, Que was a highly successful high school coach at Reidsville Senior High School. As a head women's basketball coach at the high school level, she compiled a career won-loss mark of 145-104, from 1978 through 1988, and also posted a 58-16 slate as a volleyball head coach.
Tucker came to the NCHSAA to be in charge of the Association's student services program, one of the most unique offerings by a state association in the country. She was primarily responsible for the Association's efforts in the area of chemical awareness. She also was involved with the organization of Student Athlete Summer Institute (SASI) programs across the state.
She was elevated to the deputy’s role in January of ’05, where she is responsible for overseeing the NCHSAA’s 23-sport program.
A member of the NCHSAA Hall of Fame, Que has served on a number of committees for the National Federation. She also serves on the Board of Directors of the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame.
