CHAPEL HILL— Jack Elliott of Garner Magnet High School and Jonnie Petree of North Henderson High School are the winners of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Performance of the Week awards, powered by Time Warner Cable SportsChannel with Subway® Restaurants.
Each week one male and one female athlete in NCHSAA competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators.
Elliott turned in a couple of outstanding baseball performances for the Trojans, who earned two victories last week. Elliott, a junior, had seven hits in eight at-bats in the two wins, going three for four in a 4-1 eight-inning triumph over West Johnston, and then collecting four hits in four trips, including a triple, and driving home two runs as Garner beat Clayton 10-3.
Petree, the shortstop for North Henderson’s softball team, extended the squad’s best start in school history last week and she had a major hand in wins over both Swain County and West Henderson. She added to that with a four for five with a pair of doubles, a home run and four runs scored in a 13-0 victory over Mountain Heritage and also set the school career record for runs scored on Monday night.
Earlier this season she had set the school record for base hits. She will be continuing her career at Presbyterian College.
TWC SportsChannel typically announces the winners of the awards during a SportsNight show and will recognize the winners throughout the week. Weekly recipients are also recognized via Twitter and Facebook.
