            On this day in history in the NCHSAA, future ACC stars Danyel Parker and Tonya Sampson teamed up to lead Clinton passed Bunker Hill 72-63 in the 2-A women’s basketball championship. Parker dropped 34 and Sampson added 25 as Clinton finished 26-0 on the season and won their first of back-to-back NCHSAA women’s basketball championships.

 

March 25, 1995

            On this day in history in the NCHSAA, in a game that saw 25 lead changes, Hickory outlasted SouthWest Edgecombe 67-63 in overtime in one of the most exciting championship games in NCHSAA women’s basketball history as Hickory took the 3-A title at Carmichael Auditorium in Chapel Hill. Datishella Byrd poured in 27 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the winners.

            On this day in history in the NCHSAA, legendary and innovative football coach Gus Purcell passed away at the age of 87. Purcell is a member of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame and made his mark as the head coach at Myers Park for many years. He grew up in Laurinburg.
