On this day in history in the NCHSAA, Morganton Freedom guard Danny Johnson fired in a Smith Center high school record 37 points to lead the Patriots to an 87-75 victory over Cary for the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A men's basketball championship. Johnson was a unanimous choice for Most Valuable Player, hitting 12 of 18 shots from the floor.
