FAYETTEVILLE– Randy Ledford, long-time head football coach at South View High School in Hope Mills, died suddenly on Tuesday afternoon, according to a report in The Fayetteville Observer which was posted on their website earlier on Tuesday.
He was found unconscious in the yard of his Hope Mills home by a neighbor and then taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. He had battled a couple of health issues during the year.
Ledford guided the South View baseball program for a number of years, leading the Tigers to the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A baseball title in 1991. He was an assistant coach with the football program when South View won the 4-A title in that sport in the fall of '91 and later served a long stint as head coach.
An inductee into the Fayetteville Sports Club Hall of Fame in 2014, Ledford was a 1971 graduate of Seventy-First High School, where he was a star athlete in baseball and football. He was a graduate of UNC-Pembroke, where was he was a baseball standout.
