WINSTON-SALEM– Nine individuals have been selected for induction to the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County High School Sports Hall of Fame, according to a report in the Winston-Salem Journal.

         The inductees, chosen by the Winston-Salem Sportsmen’s Club,  include administrators, athletes, and game officials. They will be honored at a ceremony on Friday, May 15, at 7 p.m. at the Benton Convention Center in Winston-Salem.

         Among the inductees are Patricia Gainey, the current principal at East Forsyth, and Jim Spivey, long-time coach and athletic director at R.J. Reynolds; former basketball standouts Mike Grace of Parkland, Sam Kennedy of R.J. Reynolds and Jeff Denny of North Forsyth; multi-sport performers Andrew Kennedy of Reynolds and Charles Williard of Glenn; and game officials Vierl Banks and Ron Sebastian.

         Gainey was the 2014 Winston-Salem/Forsyth County principal of the year.  Spivey spent 45 years teaching and coaching in that school system, including his last 28 at R.J. Reynolds and 26 years as athletic director.

         Grace, now an attorney, led Parkland to the final eight in the NCHSAA playoffs during a career in the late 1960’s and early ‘070’s.  Kennedy starred fir Reynolds and went on to Guilford, where he was an NAIA All-American. Denny led North Forsyth and then went on to play at North Carolina.

         Kennedy was a standout in both wrestling and football, later playing football at Minnesota in 1972 through ’74, while Williard was a basketball-baseball star in the late 1950’s.

         Banks officiated high school and college basketball and football for more than 40 years, including working games in the CIAA and the ACC, and Sebastian has had a 50-year officiating career, including a number of NCHSAA baseball and basketball championships and is a regional supervisor of officials for the NCHSAA.
