NCHSAA Men’s Golf Championships: 1st Day Complete

BISHOP MCGUINNESS, ERHARDT ON TOP IN NCHSAA 1-A MEN’S GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS
 
 
          FOXFIRE VILLAGE— Kernersville Bishop McGuinness has a sizable team lead and Reilly Erhardt of the Villlians is the individual leader after Monday’s first day of the 18th annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 1-A men’s golf championships on the Grey Fox Course at the Foxfire Golf and Country Club.
            Bishop McGuinness, gunning for its fifth consecutive NCHSAA 1-A title, fired a 304 as a team to hold a 19-shot advantage over Lincoln Charter at 323.  Boonville Starmount is third at 333.
The best four of five individual scores count toward the team total.
            Erhardt shot a one-over par 73 to take a two-shot lead over the field after the first day.  Justin Morgan of Lincoln Charter and Grady Anderson of Lejeune each recorded three-over scores of 75.  The course is set at par 72 and 6,641 yards for the championship.
            Prior to 1986, all NCHSAA schools competed for a single title in an open tournament. Play went to three classifications in 1986 and then to four classes beginning with the 1998 tournaments.
            A total of 72 golfers began play in the two-day tournament. Action is scheduled to resume at eight o’clock on Tuesday morning.

NCHSAA 2-A GOLF

DEFENDING CHAMP JEFFERYS LEADS WAY IN NCHSAA 2-A GOLF
 
            WHISPERING PINES — Defending individual champion Cole Jefferys of SouthWest Edgecombe put himself into position to seek another state title after Monday’s action in the 30th annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 2-A men’s golf championships on the Pines Course at the Country Club of Whispering Pines.
            Jefferys shot a one-over par 73 to have sole possession of first place after one round.  Tanner Bibey of South Stokes is in second, three shots off the pace, with a trio of golfers tied for third at 76.
          The championship is being held on a par 72 layout set at 6,695 yards for the NCHSAA event.
South Stokes leads the way in the team standings with a 323, eight shots ahead of Newton-Conover, which has won the last two 2-A championships.  Wilkes Central is in third, 10 shots back. The best four of five individual scores count toward the team total.

NCHSAA 3-A GOLF

        DEFENDING CHAMP FORESTVIEW, EAST GASTON TIED AT TOP OF TEAM STANDINGS
 
         SOUTHERN PINES – Three-time defending champion Gastonia Forestview and East Rowan are deadlocked for the top spot in the team standings after Monday's first day of the 30th annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A men’s golf championships at the Longleaf Golf and Country Club.
        The course is set at par 71 and 6,513 yards for the NCHSAA championship.
        Forestview and East Rowan each carded team scores of 295, eight shots ahead of Waxhaw Marvin Ridge, which finished second a year ago, and 11 in front of Waxhaw Cuthbertson.
        The top of the leaderboard in the individual standings is really crowded, with Cuthbertson’s Michael Sardinia the first-round leader with a one-under par 70.  Six golfers are at even par 71 and a total of 10 players are within three shots of the lead.

NCHSAA 4-A MEN'S GOLF

PINECREST’S BAE LEADS PACK BY TWO SHOTS;
MYERS PARK SITS ATOP TEAM STANDINGS IN NCHSAA 4-A MEN’S GOLF

 
            PINEHURST— Eric Bae of Southern Pines Pinecrest had the only sub-par round of the day on Monday to take the individual lead in the 79th annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A men’s golf championships at Pinehurst Country Club number two.
            Bae fired a two-under par 70 to take a two-shot lead over Doc Redman of Raleigh Leesville Road.   Raleigh Broughton’s Stephen Saleeby, who was tied for fourth in last year’s 4-A championships, and Bryce Hendrix of Greenville D.H. Conley were three shots off the pace.
            The course was laid out at 6,825 yards for Monday’s action.
            Bae’s sub-par round helped put Pinecrest in second place, just two shots behind first-day team leader Charlotte Myers Park, which recorded an even 300. Defending champion Raleigh Broughton is in third at 304.
The best four of five individual scores count toward the team total.
            Prior to 1986, all NCHSAA schools competed for a single title in an open tournament. Play went to three classifications in 1986 and then to four classes beginning with the 1998 tournaments.
            A total of 72 golfers began play in the two-day tournament. Action is scheduled to resume at eight o’clock on Tuesday morning with play moving to Pinehurst number four, which will play at par 72 and 6,715 yards.
