Wilson Prep Beats Corvian Community at the Buzzer 65-63

WINSTON-SALEM – The Wilson Prep Academy Tigers defended the NCHSAA 1A Men’s Championship in dramatic fashion on Friday afternoon at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum with a 65-63 win over Corvian Community.
Corvian’s Adrian Scott made one of two free throws with four seconds left in the fourth quarter to take a 63-62 lead. On the ensuing play, Leslie Minter fired off a would-be buzzer-beating 3-pointer that missed the mark, but he was fouled on the play and made all three free throws to take back the lead.
The Cardinals had .6 seconds left and found a look, but it bounced off the rim as the horn sounded.
Wilson Prep’s Ben Ferguson, who finished with 32 points and seven rebounds, was named the Charlie Adams Most Valuable Player for the game. Brandon Anderson, who had nine points and five rebounds, was named the West Most Outstanding Player.
Corvian Community’s Jack Hudson was named the East Most Outstanding Player for his eight-point, 17-rebound performance. R.J. Moore led the Cardinals with 20 points in the game.
The win gives Wilson Prep its third state title, as they won last season and in 2021. The Tigers finished the 23-24 campaign 27-5. The Cardinals finished the year 27-4.

Led by 16 points from Leslie Minter, the Wilson Prep Tigers advanced to the NCHSAA 1A State Championship Game on Friday with a 62-46 win over the Bertie Falcons.
The Tigers took control of the game early as they started the game on a 10-0 run and finished the first quarter up 23-7. The two teams played the final three quarters even. David Ellis had 11 points and 17 rebounds for the Tigers, and Josh Hicks added 13 points and three steals. For the Falcons, Trevon Halleran had 16 points and four rebounds. - Corvian Community Edges South Stokes | Box Score | Video Highlights
Corvian Community held off South Stokes in the 1A West Regional Final 53-41 to earn a spot in the State Championship on Friday against Wilson Prep.
The Cardinals were led by 15 points from R.J. Moore Jr. and a double-double from Jack Hudson, who had 14 points and 13 rebounds. The Sauras had a pair of scorers in double digits as Korrin N’Diaye had 12 points and 12 rebounds, and Barry Hairston Jr. added 10 points.
Cherokee Rolls to First Title Since 1996, Tops East Columbus

WINSTON-SALEM – The Cherokee Lady Braves brought the pressure early and rolled to a 74-32 win against East Columbus on Friday night at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
Cherokee opened the game with a 15-3 run and never looked back, forcing 30 turnovers and picking up 18 steals along the way. The Lady Braves led 36-28 at the break and turned up the pressure even more in the third quarter, outscoring the Gators 26-2.
The Lady Braces were led by Cecily “dvdaya” Swimmer as she had 17 points, five steals and four assists. She was named the Kay Yow Most Valuable Player for her performance in the game. Joscelyn Stamper also had 17 points, 14 rebounds and six steals and was named West Most Outstanding Player.
For the Gators, Malia Graham had 10 points and six rebounds and was named the East Most Outstanding Player. East Columbus finished the year 26-2, losing only to East Bladen, who they beat in the Eastern Regional Finals, and the Lady Braves.
The Lady Braves finished the 2023-24 season 29-1, losing only to the Choctaw Central Warriors of Philadelphia, Miss.
The win gave Cherokee its second Women’s Basketball Championship in its third appearance. The Lady Braves last won in 1996.

A pair of double-doubles powered East Columbus past East Bladen 76-66 in the first game of the NCHSAA Regional Championships.
Malia Graham had 29 points and 11 rebounds for the Gators, and Chynna Patrick added 17 points and 16 boards. For the Eagles, Laila Smith poured in 36 points, and NeNe Ward added 19.
East Columbus will face Cherokee in the 1A NCHSAA Women’s Championship Game on Friday. - Cherokee Topples Mountain Heritage 64-51 | Box Score | Video Highlights
Three Cherokee Lady Braves scored in double figures as they advanced to the State Championship game with a 64-51 win against Mountain Heritage.
Whitney Rogers led all scorers with 17 points and both Daisee Fourkiller-Raby and Creedon Arch added 10 points. For the Cougars, Ava Webb had 15 points, Keira Wilson added 14 and Lilly Neill chipped in with 10.
Cherokee jumped out to an early lead and led 20-8 after the first quarter and never trailed the rest of the way.
Reidsville Completes Perfect Season, Tops Farmville Central in Overtime 78-77

WINSTON-SALEM – The Reidsville Rams outlasted the Farmville Central Jaguars in overtime to finish the season as undefeated 2A NCHSAA Men’s Basketball State Champions on Saturday night at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
The 2024 Championship Game was a rematch of the 2023 Final, which Farmville Central won.
On Saturday, Farmville Central forced overtime as Mykal “MJ” Williams hit a 3-pointer with seven seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 70-70. In the extra frame, Williams put the Jaguars ahead 77-76 with 56 seconds left with a layup, but with 17 seconds left, Reidsville’s Dionte Neal responded with a layup of his own to take the lead back 78-77.
Farmville Central’s final attempt at the buzzer bounced off to seal the win for Reidsville.
The Rams were led by 29 points from Johnniyus Sharpe Jr., and he was named the West Most Outstanding Player in the game. Kendre Harrison added 19 points on 12 shots, 13 rebounds and five blocks. Harris was awarded the Charlie Adams Most Valuable Player Award for his performance.
Williams, who finished the game with 23 points, was named Most Outstanding Player for the East. Farmville Central’s Alex Moye added 22 points and 12 rebounds.
Reidsville finished the year 29-0 and is now 5-1 all-time in the NCHSAA Championship Games. Reidsville won its first title 100 years ago in 1924 and won its other championships in 1973, 1994, and 2003.
The Jaguars finished the season 30-2 and is now 8-3 in Championship Games.

Farmville Central outscored Goldsboro by 21 points in the second quarter. That proved to be the difference as they won 74-54 in the 2A East Men’s Regional Final Wednesday at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
Four different Jaguars scored in double figures, including Tyler Whitehurst, who had a team-high 13. J.D. Daniels added 12 points and nine rebounds, while Jordan Jones and Mykal Williams had 11 and 10, respectively. For Goldsboro, Amari Latham had 22 points and ten rebounds.
Farmville Central will make its sixth consecutive appearance in the 2A Men’s State Championship Game on Saturday.

The Reidsville Rams defended their 2A West Regional Championship with a 76-72 win against Salisbury on Wednesday night.
Kendre Harrison was a force in the game as he had 19 points and 19 rebounds – 11 offensive – and had two blocks and two steals. Johnniyus Sharpe had a team-high 21 points for the Rams. For Salisbury, Jayden Harris scored a game-high 30 points, and Bryce Dalton added 17.
The Rams and the Jaguars will meet in the State Championship game for the second year in a row on Saturday.
North Pitt Knocks Off East Burke 72-60

WINSTON-SALEM – The North Pitt Panthers won their fourth NCHSAA Women’s Basketball Championship with a 72-60 win against the East Burke Cavaliers on Saturday afternoon at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
The Panthers took the lead in the first quarter and never trailed the rest of the way, though the Cavaliers kept within striking distance for most of the Championship.
North Pitt was led by Jordan Speller’s 27-point, 10-rebound performance. Speller also had four assists, three steals, and a pair of blocks and was named the Kay Yow Most Outstanding Player of the game.
Zamareya Jones also had a double-double for the Panthers as she posted 21 points, 13 rebounds and five assists. She was named the East Most Outstanding Player for her performance.
For the Cavaliers, Kara Brinkley had a game-high 28 points and 19 rebounds. She went 9-for-15 from the floor and 9-of-11 from the stripe and was named the West Most Outstanding Player.
North Pitt finished the season 29-3 and gave East Burke its only loss of the year, as the Cavaliers finished the year 31-1.
North Pitt adds the 2024 Championship to their titles in 1972, 2016 and 2018. Friday was the first appearance in the Championship Game for the Cavaliers.

The East Burke Cavaliers earned their first NCHSAA Women’s Basketball Championship Game appearance with a 48-39 win against Lincoln Charter on Wednesday at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
Braelyn Stilwell led the Cavaliers as she dropped 27 points on 8-of-13 shooting and added four rebounds and four steals. Both Kara Brinkley, who had 10 rebounds, and Ally Moore added eight points. For Lincoln Charter, Symphani Stevens had a team-high 17 points.
Lincoln Charter took an early lead and led 11-8 after the first quarter, but the Cavaliers took the lead before halftime and held off a late push to seal the win.
- North Pitt rolls to Finals with 70-45 win over Seaforth | Box Score | Video Highlights
The North Pitt Panthers saw a pair of 20-plus point performances as they beat Seaforth 70-45 in the 2A East Women’s Regional Final on Wednesday.
Zamareya Jones led the way with 29 points and nine rebounds and Jordan Speller poured in 24 points on 13 shots, had five steals and zero turnovers. The Panthers took good care of the basketball all game long as they had just six turnovers as a team.
For Seaforth, Gabrielle White posted a double-double with 30 points and 11 rebounds.
Central Cabarrus Goes Back-to-back with a 90-62 Win Against Seventy-First

WINSTON-SALEM – The Central Cabarrus Vikings finished off a perfect 33-0 season and defended their 2023 State Championship by beating Seventy-Frist 90-62 in Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum Friday night.
The Vikings jumped out to an early lead and never trailed in the game. Central Cabarrus had built a 28-11 lead by the end of the first quarter and led by as many as 31 in the fourth.
Central Cabarrus was led by 22 points from Josh Dalton, a 6-foot-9 senior, and he was named the West Most Outstanding Player for his performance. Desmond Kent Jr., added 20 points and nine rebounds and was named the Charlie Adams Most Valuable Player of the game.
Chase Daniel added 14 points and eight assists, and his twin brother Carson Daniel had 13 and seven assists.
For Seventy-First, Jaquez Foster had a team-high 15 points and Mylon Campbell added 14 points, six assists and six rebounds. Campbell was named the East Most Outstanding Player.
The Falcons finished the season 28-3 and are now 0-5 in State Championship Games.

The Seventy-First Falcons jumped out to an early lead over Westover and earned a 63-44 win to advance to the NCHSAA 3A State Championship Game.
The Falcons were led by 25 points from Jacques Foster as he dropped 25 points including five 3-pointers. Mylan Campbell added 13 points and DeAndre Nance had 12 and 9 rebounds. For Westover, Ari Fulton had 15 points and eight rebounds and Jaeden James chipped in 10 points.
Seventy-First went 15-17 from the free throw line and made six of its 13 3-point attempts.
- Central Cabarrus holds off Hickory 87-78 | Box Score | Video Highlights
In a marquee battle of unbeaten teams, Central Cabarrus earned the right to defend their 3A State Championship with an 87-78 win over Hickory.
Desmond Kent Jr. led the Vikings with 25 points and eight rebounds, and Carson Daniel added 22 points and seven boards. For the Red Tornadoes, Jay Powell had a team-high 23 points and went 6-for-9 from the 3-point line.
The Vikings led by one at the break and seven going into the fourth quarter. Central Cabarrus outscored Hickory 23-21 in the final frame to remain unbeaten and punch their ticket to Friday’s Championship Game with Seventy-First.
West Rowan Pulls Away from Terry Sanford 64-52

WINSTON-SALEM – The West Rowan Falcons successfully defended their 2023 NCHSAA Championship with a 64-52 win against Terry Sanford on Friday at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
The Bulldogs led by two points at the break, but the Falcons took the lead in the third quarter and outscored Terry Sanford 23-14 in the fourth quarter to pull away. Lauren Arnold powered the Falcons with 17 points and 17 rebounds and was named the Kay Yow Most Valuable Player for her efforts.
Emma Clark added 13 points and 12 rebounds for the Falcons and was named the West Most Outstanding Player. Tiara Thompson was West Rowan’s leading scorer with 18 points and she also had eight rebounds. The Falcons out-rebounded Terry Sanford 49-31 in the game.
For Terry Sanford, Breonna Roaf had a team-high 18 points and dished out seven assists. She was named the East Most Outstanding Player.
West Rowan is now 2-0 in NCHSAA Championship Games while Terry Sanford is now 0-4. The Falcons finished the 2023-24 season 31-1 while the Bulldogs were 26-6.

The West Rowan Falcons continued their NCHSAA 3A Championship defense on Tuesday at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum as they moved past A.C. Reynolds 66-54.
The Falcons pulled in front in the second quarter after an even first and took a nine-point lead into halftime. The lead stretched to as many as 18 in the third quarter. Four different Falcons scored double figures, and they were led by Tiara Thompson, who had 17 and 10 boards. Emma Clark added 14 points and both Mya Edwards and Demya Phifer each had 12.
For the Rockets, Peyton Harvey had 15 points, and Julie Jamnus had 12.
- Terry Sanford tops South Central 58-50 | Box Score | Video Highlights
The Terry Sanford Bulldogs powered past South Central 58-50 to earn a spot in the 3A Championship Game on Friday.
The Bulldogs dominated the glass on Tuesday, outrebounding South Central 51-31 as Breonna Roaf, Rebecca Kaba and Taleah Meadows each had double-digit rebounds in the game. Roaf and Kaba both finished with double-doubles. Amaya Brown led Terry Sanford in scoring with 16 points.
For South Central, eight different players scored and Brooklynne Evans led the way with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
North Mecklenburg Outlasts New Hanover for 4A Crown

WINSTON-SALEM – The North Mecklenburg Vikings topped the New Hanover Wildcats 57-47 on Saturday night at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum to claim their third NCHSAA Men’s Basketball State Championship.
The Vikings led for 31 and a half of the 32 minutes in the game and were powered by Isaiah Evans, who played all 32 minutes. Evans led all scorers with 23 points and he added eight rebounds. He was named the Charlie Adams Most Valuable Player for his performance on the night.
Chadlyn Traylor added 15 points on seven shots and was named the Most Outstanding Player for the West.
For the Wildcats, Rodmik Allen was named the Most Outstanding Player for the East as he socred 13 points and had two rebounds and two steals. Parker Crittenden led New Hanover in scoring with 14 and Nolan Billings added 10 and eight boards.
The Vikings finished the season 30-3 and won their third title but only the second Championship Game as their last title came in the Covid-19 shortened playoffs. The Regionals had been completed but not Championship Game was held and Co-Champs were declared.
New Hanover finished the year 32-1.

- New Hanover squeaks past Richmond Senior 55-53 | Box Score
Thanks to a pair of late free throws from Rodmik Allen, New Hanover advanced to the State Championship Game with a 55-53 win over Richmond on Thursday evening at LJVM.
Allen, who finished with a team-high 23 points, helped his team recover from a 10-point third-quarter deficit and hit two free throws with 1:10 to play, and those proved to be the final points of the game. Paul McNeil Jr. led Richmond with 36 points and 12 rebounds.
For New Hanover, Zeus Batts had nine points and a team-high 7 rebounds.
- North Mecklenburg tops Lake Norman in Overtime 65-61 | Box Score
North Mecklenburg advanced to the 4A Men’s Championship Game with a 65-61 win over Lake Norman in overtime on Thursday night.
Isaiah Evans, who hit the shot at the end of regulation that tied the game, finished the night with 30 points, 11 rebounds, five steals, three assists, and two blocks. Trey Maxwell III had 14 points and 5 rebounds, and Chadlyn Traylor added 13 points as well.
For Lake Norman, five players scored in double-figures including Trent Stelhour who had 14 points and 15 rebounds and Santana Lynch had 14 points and 14 rebounds.
Rolesville Comes Back and Beats Charlotte Catholic 65-58

WINSTON-SALEM – A ferocious fourth-quarter rally propelled the Rolesville Rams to their first 4A Women’s Basketball State Championship on Saturday afternoon at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The Rams outscored the Charlotte Catholic Cougars 28-14 in the fourth quarter to win 65-58.
The Cougars led by two at the break and seven at the start of the fourth quarter, but the Rams cranked up their defensive pressure and turned steals into fast-break layups. For the game, Rolesville had 16 transition points compared to just four from the Cougars.
The Rams were led by point guard Caitlyn Jones, who scored 27 points and seven assists. She was named the Kay Yow Most Valuable Player for her performance in the game. Camryn Lee had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Kayla Bush scored seven points and nine boards. Bush was named the Most Outstanding Player for the East.
Blanca Thomas had 16 points, 11 rebounds, and four blocks for the Cougars and was named the Most Outstanding Player for the West. Gracynn Gough added 15 points and six rebounds.
Rolesville finished the season 27-5 and is now 1-0 in the Championship Finals. Charlotte Catholic also finished the season 27-5.

- Charlotte Catholic knocks off Watauga 61-55 | Box Score
Led by 27 points and 18 points from Blanca Thomas, the Charlotte Catholic Cougars defeated top-seeded Watauga 61-55 in the 4A West Regional Finals.
The Pioneers trailed by seven at halftime and pulled to within two at the end of the third quarter, but the Cougars held Watauga at arms-length in the final frame. Three other Cougars each had nine points: Olivia Fava, Gracynn Gough, and Maggie Kernodle.
For Watauga, Kate Sears had 38 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and four steals.
- Rolesville outlasts Hoggard 47-34 | Box Score
The Rolesville Rams topped the Hoggard Vikings 47-34 on Thursday afternoon at Lawrence Joel Memorial Coliseum.
The Rams were led by 11 points from Caitlyn Jones and 10 from Taliya Rowe. Jones added four steals and four assists. Kayla Bush added eight points and nine rebounds. Hoggard’s Avery Fitzgerald had a team-high 10 points and six rebounds. Tristan Shivers chipped in seven points and four boards.
Rolesville will face Charlotte Catholic on Saturday in the 4A Championship Game.
