CHAPEL HILL— Cidney Bowers of South Stanly High School and Jamal Wheeler of Polk County High School have been named winners of the NCHSAA Performance of the Week awards, powered by Time Warner Cable Sports Channel with Jersey Mike’s Subs®.
Each week one male and one female athlete in North Carolina High School Athletic Association competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators.
Bowers, a junior on the South Stanly volleyball tem, helped lead her team to three consecutive wins last week. which ran the South Stanly winning streak to 13 in a row.
The victories included a win over previously unbeaten Gray Stone Day as South Stanly did not drop a single set en route to the three wins. Bowers was credited with 44 kills in those victories to go with nine service aces, two digs and two blocks.
Wheeler, a senior quarterback for the Polk County football team, established several new school records as he led his Wolverines to a 50-7 victory over Madison.
Wheeler scored a total of six touchdowns, rushing for scores on runs of 12,11,72, 32 and 54 yards and also tallied on an 82-yard kickoff return. The 6 TDs set a new school record, breaking the mark set by Jim Ollis back in 2003. Wheeler also ran for a two-point conversion to wind up scoring 38 points in the contest, also a new Polk standard.
The Polk standout rushed for 236 yards on 10 carries, playing only the first three quarters, and his 23.6 yards per carry was also a new Polk single-game record.
TWC Sports Channel typically announces the winners of the awards during its Tuesday night SportsNight show and will recognize the winners throughout the week. Weekly recipients will also be recognized via Twitter and Facebook.
