CHAPEL HILL—Sibel Tanik of Raleigh’s Sanderson High School and Kyeem Perry of Hertford County High School have been named winners of the NCHSAA Performance of the Week awards, powered by Time Warner Cable Sports Channel with Jersey Mike’s Subs®.
Each week one male and one female athlete in North Carolina High School Athletic Association competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators.
Tanik, a freshman tennis player, is the number-one singles player at Sanderson and also plays on the number-one doubles team. She has led Sanderson to a perfect 16-0 dual team record and is unbeaten in doubles play while compiling a 13-2 mark in singles.
Last week Tanik defeated two-time defending NCHSAA state singles champion Suzanne Boyden of Raleigh Wakefield by 7-5, 6-7, (10-6), reportedly the first time the senior Boyden has dropped a set in regular season play in the last three years.
Perry, a sophomore on the Hertford football team, was instrumental in his team’s 53-40 victory over Bertie last week. He rushed for a career high 236 yards on 21 carries and scored two touchdowns, hauled in two receptions for 63 yards and another score, and returned a kickoff 84 yards for a touchdown.
TWC Sports Channel typically announces the winners of the awards during its Tuesday night SportsNight show and will recognize the winners throughout the week. Weekly recipients will also be recognized via Twitter and Facebook.
