Through partnership with the NCHSAA, FloSports has designated funds to be used towards scholarship support of one male and one female indoor track and field student-athlete at NCHSAA member schools. Each recipient will receive a $1,000 scholarship.
The 2023-24 winners of the FloSports Scholarships are Margaret Garner from Porter Ridge High School and Barret Stork from Franklin High School.
Margaret Garner qualified for the Indoor Track and Field Championships in 2024 in four events and won 500-meter in the 4A competition. She won the 400 meter regional championship in outdoor in 2023 and is a two-time 500 meter Charlotte City Champion. She is also a varsity captain and all-conference and all-region player on the soccer team.
She participated with the Interact Club and is President of the Pirates for Christ Club. Garner was a junior marshal and interns at a veterinary office, working toward here Vet Assistant Certification. She volunteers with the Special Olympics as well as at Porter Ridge Middle School where she was a peer tutor and volunteer track coach.
She also maintains a 4.0 unweighted GPA. Despite having torn two ligaments in her knee, she has returned to action and earned a scholarship to play soccer at Liberty University where she plans to study Zoology.
“Margaret is a remarkable individual who has demonstrated outstanding dedication, skill, and commitment to track and field,” said her Track Coach Meredith Forrest. “She is by far one of the most talented athletes I have ever had the honor of coaching. Not only is she an exceptionally talented athlete, she is the heart of our team; a true leader and an example for everyone to look up to.”
Barrett Stork was a member of two teams that won NCHSAA State Championships, the 2023 3A Indoor Track and Field Championship and the 2023 3A Outdoor Track and Field Championship. He was named all-conference in Cross Country three times and has been named team MVP of both the Cross Country and Track and Field Teams. He’s also been named All-Region and All-State in Indoor Track.
He participates with the FCA, the Student Leadership Team and the National Honors Society and has received the Rotary International High Honors, an Unspoken Leader Award and a Franklin High School Impact Award. He was a junior marshal and a Senior Representative for the Mr. and Miss Franklin High School Award.
Stork is the praise team drummer at his church and has participated in service-oriented mission trips with future trips planned. He has volunteered with the Mainspring Conservation Trust and CareNet. He participated in the World Vision 30-Hour Famine and collected over 5,000 canned good items and over $16,000 to fight hunger.
He sports a 4.0 unweighted GPA and hopes to study Architecture in college.
“I know that he will succeed in any environment in which he is placed, and I know that the monetary investment given to him will not be wasted,” said former teacher Emily Presley. “I say this without hesitation not because he has a brilliant mind, a motivated personality, or an incredible work ethic (which are all true), but because he is an individual who understands the purpose of education.”
