NCHSAA Women’s Tennis Championships: 1st Day Summaries

NCHSAA 1-A WOMEN’S TENNIS
 
FINALS SET IN NCHSAA STATE 1-A WOMEN’S TENNIS

 
    CARY– The matchups are now set for the singles and doubles finals in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 1-A women’s tennis championships at the Cary Tennis Center after Friday’s opening day action.
    Morgan Blount of Durham Voyager Academy will take on Marisa Deininger of Community School of Davidson for the singles title after both won a pair of Friday matches. Deininger was the 2013 1-A singles runner-up.
    The doubles championship will send Elkin’s Miracle Walters and Morgan Randleman against the Bishop McGuinness pair of Morgan Auger and Anna Petrangeli. Both teams earned two straight set victories in Friday’s action.
    The field for the 1-A tennis has eight entries in singles and doubles, so Saturday’s finals are the only matches scheduled.

NCHSAA 2-A WOMEN'S TENNIS

MAIDEN’S HUFFMAN ADVANCES IN NCHSAA 2-A WOMEN’S TENNIS; LAKE NORMAN CHARTER PLAYERS MOVE ON
 
        CARY— Zoe Huffman of Maiden advanced into the singles semifinals with a pair of convincing victories in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 2-A women’s tennis championships on Friday at the Cary Tennis Center.
            Huffman won both of her matches in straight sets and lost only one game in the process. She will play Rachel Rice of the Durham School of the Arts in one semifinal, while Lake Norman Charter teammates Lauren Bush and Lauren Loveless square off in the other semifinal match.
            In fact, Lake Norman Charter had two singles players and two doubles teams qualify for the state championships, and all have advanced to Saturday semifinals. Defending doubles champs Olivia Archer and Hannah Archer of Lake Norman Charter had little trouble in their two victories, dropping only one game in four sets.
         Four of the eight opening round doubles matches went the full three sets, with the team that dropped the opening set coming back to win in three of those.
            Semifinal matches are scheduled to start Saturday morning at nine o’clock.

NCHSAA 3-A WOMEN'S TENNIS

DEFENDING SINGLES CHAMP HAYNES OF ASHEVILLE MOVES CLOSER TO 3-A CHAMPIONSHIP
 
            BURLINGTON–  Defending singles champion Adrienne Haynes of Asheville had two convincing victories on Friday and moved closer to another title in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A women’s tennis championships at the Burlington Tennis Center.
            Haynes dropped only one game in four sets to move into a Saturday morning semifinal against Lauren Scism of Shelby Crest.  In the other semifinal, Sarah Jiang of Cox Mill, the state singles runner-up in both 2012 and ’13, faces West Henderson’s Savannah Smith.
            Asheville also advanced the doubles team of Kristie Kim and Mary Hamrick into the semifinals, with the duo’s opening round win a tough three-set victory over Ellen Yu and Joy Stouffer of Chapel Hill.

4-A WOMEN'S TENNIS

PANTHER CREEK PAIR CLOSER TO 4TH STRAIGHT DOUBLES STATE TITLE
 

            RALEIGH–  Sammi Smith and Jordan Strickland of Cary Panther Creek took a couple of steps toward a fourth consecutive doubles championship in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A women’s tennis championships on Friday at the Millbrook Exchange Park.
            The Panther Creek pair won both of their Friday matches in straight sets to set up a Saturday morning semifinal against Caroline Igo and Summer Jacobs of Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons. The only time that feat of four straight titles was accomplished in doubles was by Lisa and Margit Monaco of Fayetteville Terry Sanford in 1977-80, when the tournament was an open event.
            Wake County is having a strong showing in the 4-A championships, as all four of the doubles teams in the semifinals are from schools located in Wake County and two of the four singles semifinalists.
            Susanne Boyden of Raleigh Wakefield, who had a bye in the opening round, won easily in her only Friday match and will play in a Saturday morning semifinal against Lauren Gish of Lake Norman. Myers Park’s Maddie Weber faces Panther Creek’s Amanda Cyr in the other singles semifinal.
