December 9, 2006

            On this day in history in the NCHSAA, 4-A football powerhouses Greenville Rose and Charlotte Independence won the last of their consecutive NCHSAA football state championships.

            In the 4-A game, the Rose Rampants finished off their undefeated season (16-0) by holding off West Charlotte 26-12 in the 4-A title game. Future East Carolina running back Jonathan Williams collected 96 yards rushing and scored three touchdowns en route to Wendy’s MVP honors as the Rampants won their fourth consecutive NCHSAA state championship

           In the nightcap on the same field, Independence won its seventh consecutive state title and 108th consecutive game by defeating Durham Riverside 49-19 in the 4-AA title game at Wallace Wade Stadium. Wendy’s MVP Dequan Leak led the Patriots’ offense with 204 yards rushing on 33 carries and four touchdowns.
