CLYDE ERWIN INDUCTS INDIVIDUALS TO ITS ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME

ASHEVILLE—Clyde Erwin High School inducted five new members into its Athletic Hall of Fame on Tuesday night.

        The ceremony was held between the women’s and men’s varsity basketball games in the Erwin gymnasium.

        The inductees included Jack Blazer (class of 1957), Wayne Golden (’63), Teresa Braswell Jamison (’80), Pete Chernous (2001), and coach Sam Riddle, who coached football at Erwin from 1973 through ’80 and had several successful teams.

        Blazer was a basketball and baseball standout who helped lead his school to an NCHSAA state runner-up finish in basketball in 1957. Golden was also a two-sport star, in basketball and baseball, who was the Most Valuable Player for Erwin’s conference championship baseball team in 1963 and later played professional baseball in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization.

        Jamison, as Teresa Braswell, was a member of the NCHSAA’s 1980 state championship basketball team who went on to play basketball at Western Carolina. She also competed in tennis and track in high school.

        Chernous played soccer, ran track and wrestled at Erwin, winning a state wrestling championship in 2001 at the 160-pound class to culminate an unbeaten senior season after finishing as state runner-up the year before.  He was awarded a wrestling scholarship to Appalachian State.

After Riddle’s coaching success at Erwin, he returned to Georgia where he continued his career coaching golf and football. He retired from public education in 1998.

Categories for those eligible for induction into the hall include any Erwin graduate who lettered in an NCHSAA-sanctioned varsity sport, any head coach at Erwin with a minimum of seven years as head coach of a varsity sport, or an individual who has made a significant contribution to the Erwin athletic program.
