1A WEST MEN’S REGIONAL FINALS RECAP: Gwyn lifts WS Prep past Lincoln Charter 63-60

Gwyn’s buzzer-beater lifts Winston-Salem Prep past Lincoln Charter 63-60

In a game that saw wild second half momentum swings, it was ultimately a freshman that stepped up to make the ultimate difference.

In the final minute of a 60-60 tie game, Winston-Salem Prep had the basketball and called two time outs to draw up the play Coach Andre Gould had in mind. It was a play with two options, one to go inside if the Phoenix saw one kind of zone, and one for a corner three if they saw another type of zone.

As fate would have it, the option for the corner three ended up being the choice and the ball fell to freshman Chaz Gwyn. Gwyn only had nine points in the game, but his final three turned out to be the most important of the game. Gwyn launched a three pointer from the deep right corner that tickled the twine as the clock hit zero to give Winston-Salem Prep a 63-60 victory over Lincoln Charter, lifting the Phoenix to their third straight Western regional championship.

The Phoenix were powered by Zaire Williams who had 18 points and 12 rebounds. Williams was only outdone by Lincoln Charter’s Koby Shubert who dropped in 19 points with five rebounds.

Winston-Salem Prep got 12 points from Daivien Williamson and 11 from Justice Goodloe. Lincoln Charter had two players other than Shubert in double figures as Lavonte Knox had 16 points and Logan Foster chipped in 10.

The Phoenix advance to their sixth state championship appearance all-time where they will meet Voyager Academy.
