4A WEST WOMEN’S REGIONAL FINAL RECAP: Northwest Guilford cruises past Southwest Guilford 58-41

NORTHWEST GUILFORD STAYS PERFECT WITH A 58-41 WIN OVER SOUTHWEST GUILFORD

Northwest Guilford has never been in a Women’s Basketball State Championship game. That will change next Saturday after the Vikings took out cross-county rival Southwest Guilford 58-41 in the 4A Western Regional Final.

The Vikings used a balanced attack with three players getting into double figures on the night. Hayley Barber, a fourth-year Varsity senior, and Cayla King, a 5’10” freshman, led the way with 14 points each.

This year’s Northwest Guilford squad returns five seniors that have played Varsity all four years, but they’ve gotten key contributions from two freshmen as well to help maintain a perfect record. The balance of experience and youthful energy has been a powerful combination for the Vikings.

Northwest Guilford crushed Southwest Guilford on the glass, out-rebounding the Cowgirls 39-15 on the day. Morgan Pointer and Bria Gibbs went to work as Pointer finished with 14 rebounds while Gibbs ripped down 11. The Vikings also built a nice half time lead hitting five three-pointers in the first half to help Northwest hold a 31-20 advantage at the break.

LaShonda Monk did her best to keep the Cowgirls in the game as she scored 15 points while teammates Tea Medley added 13 and Lauren Carter scored 10.

Northwest heads to the State Championship game for the first time in school history where they will face Millbrook on Saturday in Chapel Hill.
