NORTH PITT BRINGS HOME THE 2A WOMEN'S TITLE OVER EAST DAVIDSON 68-65
The Panthers of North Pitt (31-1) used a strong third quarter by Nyjanique Langley to get past East Davidson 68-65 and win the 2A Women’s Basketball Championship.
Langley put the Panthers on her back in the third quarter to trim into the Golden Eagles lead, dumping in 14 points as the Panthers got within six to close the third down 50-44. She finished as the game’s Most Valuable Player with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
A quick lay in by Dorian Sharp of North Pitt started the fourth quarter and cut the Eagle advantage to just four. Sharp was named the Panther’s Most Outstanding Player with a 21 point and 14 rebound performance on the afternoon.
Ta’Shada Joseph hit a lay-up and was fouled with 5:17 to go in the game. Her free throw tied the game at 52. Then the Panthers forced a turnover and Dorian Sharp hit a short jumper to give North Pitt their first lead since the middle of the second quarter. East Davidson would answer two or three times to tie or trim the Panther advantage, but the Golden Eagles could never get over the hump late in the game.
North Pitt stormed out to an early 9-3 lead before East Davidson (29-2) found their footing late in the first quarter. The Eagles managed to trim the deficit to 13-11 at the quarter break.
Madi Hallman and Brooke Anders led a three-point barrage in the second quarter as the Eagles came out firing on all cylinders. Hallman and Anders combined to hit five three-pointers in 6 possessions around the midway point of the quarter to start to pull away. Kendall Simmons added a three to open the quarter and give the Golden Eagles a short-lived one point lead.
Hallman led all scorers in the first half with nine points. She finished with 19 points on 5 of 10 shooting, adding 7 rebounds on her way to Most Outstanding Player honors for the Eagles. The seniors for East Davidson, including Hallman and Bayley Plummer finished their high school careers with better than 100 wins for Head Coach Don Corry.
