LAST YEAR’S CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP

With their backs against the wall following a 4-3 game one win by Millbrook, Providence bats woke up in the final two games of the series. The Panthers pounded out 12 hits in a 10-0 five-inning shutout, forcing a decisive game three. Austin Leonard tossed a two-hit shutout in the game and Tucker Jones went three for three at the plate. The Panthers poured it on in game three as well as Providence busted open a 3-2 with seven runs in the sixth inning en rout to a 10-2 victory and the school’s second 4A baseball state title.

Marvin Ridge won the school’s first 3A Baseball title, sweeping C.B. Aycock in the series. After a 2-0 win in game one of the series, the Mavericks rallied from a 2-0 deficit, scoring three runs in the fifth inning of game two to take the lead. They added four more runs in the sixth and snatched 7-3 victory. All nine Maverick starters hit safely in the balanced attack of game two, although Mark Glover’s run-scoring double was a key hit in the sixth.

The 2A Championship also saw a first time winner as South Granville won game one 9-2 over Randleman. The Vikings, however, stumbled in game two, getting beaten 11-1 in six innings, forcing a decisive game three. The Vikings grabbed a 3-0 lead in the third, as Justin Bullock started things off with a triple before scoring on a throwing error. Randleman answered right back with four runs of their own in a two-out rally in the third, making it 4-3. A two-run double by Cameron Willis struck the decisive blow, making it 5-4 and the Vikings added three more for good measure to take the game 8-4.

Whiteville finished off back-to-back state championships in 1A, belting their way past South Stanly two games to one. The Wolfpack shut out South in game one 7-0 before South Stanly recovered for a 6-2 victory in game 2. The Wolfpack would not be denied the school’s eighth state championship crushing South 6-1 in a decisive game three. Mackenzie Gore was named the series MVP after coming on to preserve the win in the final two innings. Gore had spun a one-hit shutout in game one and also drove in two runs in that game.
