4A Individual Men’s Tennis Championships wrap up: Middle Creek’s Stachowiak repeats, Page’s Brown & Oldis clinch doubles

The North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s 4A Individual Men’s Tennis championships finished up an exciting final day of play at Millbrook Exchange Park. Middle Creek’s dominant singles performer Nick Stachowiak repeated as 4A singles champion, his third singles title in a four year career, while Page’s pair Hardy Brown and Jack Oldis won the school’s fourth doubles title, and first since 1985.

Brown & Oldis’ day began with a tight first set against cross-town rivals Aaron Pascua and Ethan Kreager from Grimsley in the semifinals. Brown & Oldis escaped that set 7-5 before closing out the match in the second set 6-0 advancing to the championship. The Pirate duo faced a familiar opponent in the championship round, as Tristan Smith and Huntley Allen from R.J. Reynolds were the opponent, the same two pairs met in last weekends regional finals. Brown and Oldis swept both sets by a score of 6-4 on their way to the doubles crown.

Stachowiak opened the day in the semifinals with a quick victory over Ryan Jurist from Lake Norman, both sets by 6-2 counts. Bennett Crane from R.J. Reynolds stood in the way of Stachowiak’s back-to-back singles championships, and provided a tough test. Stachowiak won the opening set 6-3 before Crane bounced back with a 6-3 victory of his own in set two. The decisive third set was all Stachowiak’s, as he held off Crane 6-3, winning his third NCHSAA singles championship, including back to back titles in his junior and senior seasons.
