GREENSBORO, N.C. – The North Carolina High School Athletic Association completed the 2016 State Championships for Track & Field at Irwin Belk Track on the campus of NC A&T State University. Despite more than 2.5 hours of a lightning delay, North Brunswick's Men's Track team sprinted past second-place Forest Hills 71-45. On the women's side of the meet, Cummings was not to be denied their 15th Women's Track & Field team championship, and their second 2A title in a row, outscoring second-place T.W. Andrews 123-45.
Cummings women took two of the four team relays, winning the 4 X 100 in 48.52 behind Lashonda Tate, Kayla Moore, Kenyae Majors and Tajah Walston. They also won the 4 X 200 relay in a classification record 1:41.59 as Tate, Moore and Walston combined with Jaida Torain to eclipse the previous 2A Women's record of 1:41.65.
Other winners for Cummings included Walston's 100 Meter Dash win in 11.94 seconds, Moore's double individual win in the 100 Meter Hurdles with a time of 13.71 (new classification record) & the 300 Meter Hurdles victory in 43.79. Mya Roberts Shot Put toss of 35' 01.50" also brought top points to Cummings on the day. Majors also took home top spot in the Long Jump with a distance of 18' 06.50".
Mount Pleasant runner Brittany Stanley was a double winner in the distance events. She took the 800 Meter Run in a 2A Classification record 2:13.53 after winning the 1600 Meters in 4:59.96.
Payton Russell from North Rowan took two individual events and also was on one winning relay team. Russell won the 400 Meter Dash in 56.44 seconds before winning the 200 Meter Dash in 24.83 seconds. She also led off North Rowan's victorious 4 X 400 Relay team, combining with teammates Brianna White, Tabitha Tulloch and Rochelle Bowman to post a time of 4:07.76.
Two other classification records were set in the Women's meet as Kaitlyn Stone from West Stokes took down the win and record in the 3200 Meter Run, finishing in 10:53.80 and beating the old 2A record of 11:12.28. Mikel Franklin from T.W. Andrews tied the 2A record in the High Jump clearing 5' 07".
On the Men's side of the meet, North Brunswick saw their 4 X 100 Relay team of Jayhlen Washington, Shaquan Graham, J.C. Smith and Cameron Barnhill take the top spot with a time of 42.51. Washington added a pair of individual wins in the Long Jump travelling 22' 06.75" and the Triple Jump striding 48' 05".
Noah Graham from Brevard took the two longest distance events, the 3200 Meter in 9:31.44 and the 1600 Meter in 4:26.69. Elliott Graves from Reidsville won both hurdles events, finishing th 110 Meter Hurdles in 13.79, a new 2A Classification Record, and completing the 300 Meter hurdles in 37.65. Carrboro's Magnus Herweyer was a double-winner in the field events as he was top in the Shot Put (51' 03.75") and the Discus Throw (155' 08").
Northeastern's distance relay teams took the longer two relays as Cedric Shannon, Seth Overman, & Tedric Shannon teamed up with Zachary Balluzzo in the 4 X 800 to win in 8:06.22 while Balluzzo took a seat for Kenny Hewitt to run with the Shannon, Overman and Jackson trio in the 4 X 400 and claim victory in 3:25.85.
