CHAPEL HILL— Natalie Petersen of Holly Springs High School and Bryson Godfrey of Alexander Central High School have been named recipients of the NCHSAA Performance of the Week awards, powered by Time Warner Cable SportsChannel.
Each week two athletes in North Carolina High School Athletic Association competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators.
Godfrey, a junior running back for the Cougars, set the school record for rushing yards in a single game, piling up 364 yards on 19 carries including three touchdowns as Alexander Central downed Ashe County 82-42. Godfrey’s performance helped the Cougars establish a new state record for rushing yards as a team in a single game with 801 as well as 927 yards of total offense, another new state record. Bryson has averaged better than 19 yards per carry on the season through four games and his Cougars are 4-0 on the year.
Senior golfer Natalie Peterson is leading the SWAC 4A Conference through the early part of the season. This week Peterson fired a 31 in a nine-hole SWAC Conference match at MacGregor Downs. The 31 was good for a 5-under par mark on the front nine and her second score of 31 this season. Her first 31 came at on the par 35 track at Lochmere.
TWC SportsChannel typically announces the winners of the awards during its Sports Night show and will recognize the winners throughout the week. Weekly recipients will also be recognized via Twitter and Facebook. The deadline for nominations is each Monday at 5 p.m through the online form that can be found here.
