CHAPEL HILL— A doubles pair, Lizzie Galush and Jenna Knors of Cardinal Gibbons High School and Demarcus Alexander from Central Cabarrus High School have been named recipients of the NCHSAA Performance of the Week awards, powered by Time Warner Cable SportsChannel.
Each week two athletes in North Carolina High School Athletic Association competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators.
Galush and Knors finished as the 4A state doubles runner-up last year but returned to the finals in 2016 to claim victory defeating Charlotte Catholic’s Megan Leonard and Rose Kenny 6-1, 6-2. The pair has an 18-2 record in doubles this year and a 38-4 career mark. Earlier in the week, Galush and Knors each won singles matches, at #1 and #2 positions respectively, to help the Crusaders advance past New Hanover in the NCHSAA Dual Team Tennis Playoffs.
Alexander, a senior running back at Central Cabarrus, rushed for 420 yards on 47 carries as Central knocked off East Rowan 61-42. He accounted for 468 yards of total offense, 6 total touchdowns and three two-point conversions. He was responsible for 18 of the 24 first downs Central Cabarrus earned on the ground.
TWC SportsChannel typically announces the winners of the awards during its Sports Night show and will recognize the winners throughout the week. Weekly recipients will also be recognized via Twitter and Facebook. The deadline for nominations is each Monday at 5 p.m through the online form that can be found here.
