STUDENTS FROM CLINTON & HERITAGE EARN PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK AWARDS

CHAPEL HILL— Mikayla Boykin from Clinton High School and Jayden Gardner from Heritage High School have been named recipients of the NCHSAA Performance of the Week awards, powered by Time Warner Cable SportsChannel.

Each week two athletes in North Carolina High School Athletic Association competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators.

Boykin, a senior on the Clinton women’s basketball team, tallied 47 points and 17 rebounds as her team beat Trask. She converted 74% of her field goal attempts. Earlier in the week, Boykin scored 34 points with 10 rebounds as the Dark Horses blitzed by Wallace-Rose Hill. Earlier this year, Boykin eclipsed the NCHSAA single game scoring record with 62 points in a game against Triton, breaking the record of 61 set by Terry Sanford’s Shea Ralph in 1996.

Gardner, a junior on the Huskies hoops team, helped lead Heritage squad to three wins on the week. He scored 25 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in a 69-59 conference win over Broughton. He followed that performance up the next night with 22 points and 17 rebounds in a 60-47 win over Village Christian. Then in an MLK Showcase game against Apex, Gardner shined with 16 points and 13 rebounds.

TWC SportsChannel typically announces the winners of the awards during its Sports Night show and will recognize the winners throughout the week. Weekly recipients will also be recognized via Twitter and Facebook. The deadline for nominations is each Monday at 5 p.m through the online form that can be found here.
