CHAPEL HILL— Leah Williams from Midway High School and Noah Haney from Hibriten High School have been named recipients of the NCHSAA Performance of the Week awards.
Each week two athletes in North Carolina High School Athletic Association competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators.
Williams, a four-year starter on the volleyball team, compiled 53 digs, 49 serve receptions and 30 service points in two matches last week. During the week, she surpassed 1,000 career digs. The senior libero has been team captain for three seasons and has led Midway to sole possession of first place in the East Central 2A Conference with wins over Clinton and East Duplin last week.
Haney, a senior on the Hibriten football squad, was a defensive game changer for the Panthers against cross-county rival, South Caldwell. He racked up seven solo tackles, including six tackles for loss, adding two sacks and two forced fumbles. He also recovered two fumbles, returning one of those recoveries for touchdown. The defensive lineman now has two turnover returns for a score on the season and also serves as the team’s kicker. He was six for seven on the night converting point after attempts and booted two touchbacks on kickoffs on the night.
Weekly recipients will be recognized on the NCHSAA Website and social media pages. They will also be honored at a banquet for all recipients from this year in late April. The deadline for nominations is each Monday at 5 p.m through the online form that can be found here.
