RECAP: 2017 Women’s Cross Country Championship

1A Women’s Cross Country Championship: Franklin Academy goes back-to-back, sweeps team and individual with Burkett’s top time

KERNERSVILLE, NC – Caitlyn Burkett won Franklin Academy’s first Women’s Cross Country individual State Championship as she cruised to an almost 30-second victory over Abigail Hemric from North Stokes. Burkett posted the top time of 19:16.94, averaging 6:12.4 per mile. Burkett, a junior, then saw her freshmen teammates Sam Burr and Taylor Roberts cross the line with a fourth and seventh place finishes respectively. Burr finished fourth with a time of 20:14.49, while Roberts crossed in 20:24.33.

Franklin Academy took the Women’s State Championship team crown for the second year in a row, outscoring Lincoln Charter 36-74. Patriot runners averaged a time of 20:32.39. Lincoln Charter finished in second with an average time of 21:23.76, led by senior Emily Elliot’s 20:29.28.

2A Women’s Cross Country Championship: Lake Norman Charter runners go one-two to sweep team and individual titles

KERNERSVILLE, NC – Lake Norman Charter School grabbed the team title, holding off North Lincoln 66-74 thanks to a one-two finish in the individual event by the Knights’ top runners. Senior Mariah Howlett crossed at 18:03.43 to win the school’s first Women’s Cross Country individual championship. She was followed closely by fellow senior Izzy Evely who finished in 18:07.57. The Knights also got a top-ten finish from freshman Abbey Farris who completed the course in 19:32.06, placing ninth overall.

Lake Norman Charter held off a hard charge by North Lincoln to capture the school’s second cross country team title on the women’s side, and their first at the 2A level. North Lincoln was led by Chandler Mccaslin as the senior finished third overall with a time of 18:43.65. North Lincoln sophomore Alyssa Galvin wasn’t far behind her teammate, finishing fifth in 19:11.64 with freshman teammate Angie Allen right behind her in sixth with a time of 19:15.47.

3A Women’s Cross Country Championship: Roberson’s Wright powers to individual title, Chapel Hill takes a third straight team crown

KERNERSVILLE, NC – T.C. Roberson senior Elise Wright captured the individual championship in the 3A Women’s Cross Country State Championship meet, posting a time of 18:03.56. She outran Katherine Dokholyan from Chapel Hill, who finished second in a time of 18:13.04. Wright became the tenth runner on the women’s side from T.C. Roberson to win the individual Cross Country Championship since 1986.

Chapel Hill won the school’s third straight team championship as the Tigers were led by Dokholyan’s second place finish. The Tigers also got an 11th place finish from junior Lilly Crook, who posted a time of 19:03.26. Senior Madi Marvin clocked in at 19:09.03 in 14th place while junior Maggie Springer timed out at 19:25.55 in 22nd.

4A Women’s Cross Country Championship: Gibbons wins eighth straight team championship, Tyner takes Laney’s first individual title in school history

KERNERSVILLE, NC – Natalie Tyner powered her way to the first individual cross country championship in Laney school history, as she finished in 17:41.82. Tyner outpaced Apex’s Calli Parker who came in second at 18:08.71, just nipping third place Sophie Faircloth from Reagan who crossed at 18:09.44.

Cardinal Gibbons got two top-ten finishes in the individual competition as junior Sloan Walter edged senior teammate Marissa Bishop for sixth place. Walter finished in 18:24.11 while seventh place finisher Bishop clocked in at 18:28.80. Gibbons runners held off Green Hope 62-89, as Crusader runners averaged 18:49.75 times while Green Hope averaged 19:07.61.
