STUDENTS FROM MOORESVILLE & MOUNTAIN ISLAND CHARTER EARN PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK AWARDS

CHAPEL HILL— Lauren Martin from Mooresville High School and Elijah Burris from Mountain Island Charter School have been named recipients of the NCHSAA Performance of the Week awards. Each week two athletes in North Carolina High School Athletic Association competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators.

Martin, a junior on the Mooresville women’s golf team, led the Blue Devils to a Conference Championship during the week. She had a low score average of 36 in conference play and was named the I-Meck 4A Women’s Golfer of the Year. During her fifth conference match of the year on October 8th, Martin shot even par 36 to win by ten strokes.

Burris, a junior on the Raptors football team, helped lead the team to a 54-24 win over Community School of Davidson on homecoming. Burris carried the ball 29 times for 362 yards and six touchdowns. According to his coach, the performance ranked Burris third all-time in single game rushing yards in Gaston County history and gave him more than 2,000 yards through eight games on the season.

Weekly recipients will be recognized on the NCHSAA Website and social media pages. They will also be honored at a banquet for all recipients from this year in early May. The deadline for nominations is each Monday at 5 p.m through the online form that can be found here.
