ASHEVILLE — One of the state’s most successful women’s basketball coaches has announced her retirement.
Smoky Mountain’s Cindi Simmons is stepping down, according to a report in the Asheville Citizen-Times as well as the Sylva Herald.
Simmons won North Carolina High School Athletic Association state championships in two sports. During her 30-year tenure at Smoky Mountain and Sylva-Webster (which merged with Cullowhee to form Smoky Mountain in 1988), her teams accumulated four state crowns. Smoky Mountain won three consecutive 3-A volleyball titles from 1991-93 and then her basketball team took the 2007 state title.
“It’s time,” said Simmons, quoted in the Asheville newspaper. “When you get to the point where I am in my career, you know it’s probably going to be coming sometime. Coaching at Sylva-Webster and Smoky Mountain has truly been one of the greatest privileges of my life.”
Simmons’ career basketball coaching record was 512-279. She also coached volleyball for 26 seasons.
