SOUTHWEST ONSLOW STANDOUT TRAGICALLY DROWNS
JACKSONVILLE— A swimmer who disappeared in the water off North Topsail Beach has been identified as a Southwest Onslow High School athletic standout.
According to various media reports, Shaq Pershey was swimming with friends at North Topsail Beach in Onslow County when he went under. His body was recovered several hours later.
Pershey was named the Outstanding Offensive Player for Southwest Onslow when the Stallions won the NCHSAA state 1-AA football championship at Carter-Finley Stadium back in December. Pershey led the Stallion running attack with 140 yards in 14 tries and a pair of TDs as Southwest defeated Swain County 44-34.
