2020-21 3A Cross Country Championship Recap

KERNERSVILLE, NC – The Cuthbertson women dominated the 3A Women’s Cross Country State Championship at Ivey Redmon Park, winning both the individual and team events. Senior Madeline Hill out legged teammate Alyssa Preisano to the line for the individual title. Hill crossed in 18:11.91 just ahead of the sophomore Preisano’s 18:16.96. The Cavaliers outscored second-place Weddington 31-46, averaging a finish of 18:45.24 for their top five runners and winning the program’s third straight team championship.

Chapel Hill men worked to the program’s twelfth title, and second in a row, outracing Weddington 35-45. The Tigers put four runners in the top 8 of the team event to overcome Weddington’s 1-2 team event placement for their top two finishers. Chapel Hill averaged 16:25.78, led by senior Emil Arangala who crossed in 16:03.87 and fifth overall. 

The men’s individual championship was won by junior Ryan Motondo from Walter M. Williams. Motondo slipped across the line at 15:44.93 to nip second place Caden Townshend from Weddington who finished in 15:48.47. Motondo is the second runner from Williams to bring home the individual championship and first since Graham Crawford did it in 2010.

The NCHSAA is proud to highlight outstanding sportsmanship and annually presents the NC Farm Bureau Sportsmanship Awards at each NCHSAA State Championship event. One member of the top two mens and womens teams are selected for the annual Cross Country Award. This year’s winners for the 3A women’s meet were Anna Ritter from Weddington and Justine Preisano from Cuthbertson. The winners on the 3A men’s side were Krystopher Durham from Weddington and Keegan Clossick from Chapel Hill.
