GREENSBORO, NC – Community School of Davidson showed exceptional form in a 6-0 win over Franklin Academy in the 2021 1A Women’s Soccer State Championship Match at Jamieson Stadium on the campus of Grimsley High School. The Spartans netted three goals in each half, continuing to pour on the pressure against a Franklin Academy side that only was able to muster four shots toward goal.
Michaela Deas was selected as the game’s Most Valuable Player, netting three goals and adding an assist on a goal to Tyler Baughn in the latter stages of the first half to put the Spartans comfortably ahead 3-0 at the break. Deas opened the scoring in the 6’ with an unassisted goal, showing remarkable skill dribbling through defenders to the edge of the box where she beat the keeper with a well-placed right-footed shot.
Deas grabbed her second in the 14’ with a right-footed volley shot to the back of the net off a beautiful cross by sophomore Cameron Koster from the right side near the goal line. Deas also scored in the second half, closing out the scoring in the 53’ when Eleanor Nguyen played her through on the left side. Deas took the feed, switched to her right foot and slipped it past the keeper to go up 6-0.
Baughn had an outstanding game for the Spartans as well, netting a pair of goals in the game. Charley Teckenbrock also played well for CSD netting the Spartans fifth goal of the day in the 49’ and assisting Baughn on the fourth of the match with a beautiful through ball that left Baughn one-on-one with the Patriots keeper.
Franklin Academy finished the season 12-1-0. The Patriots were 7-0 as the Champions of the North Central 1A Conference. Franklin Academy won the 1A Eastern Regional for the fifth time in program history, and fifth consecutive season.
Community School of Davidson concluded the year 18-0-0. The Spartans were perfect, 12-0, in the PAC 7 1A, winning the league title. CSD won the program’s fourth Western Regional Championship, returning to the State Championship for the first time since 2017. They collected the school’s third State Championship in Women’s Soccer.
The NCHSAA is committed to recognizing and promoting good sportsmanship and has partnered with the NC Farm Bureau to highlight individuals from each State Championship event who exemplify the ideals of outstanding sportsmanship. The 2021 1A Women’s Soccer Sportsmanship Award recipients were Tonie Higgs from Franklin Academy and Clara Scruggs from Community School of Davidson who were recognized prior to the opening game.
