HICKORY—St. Stephens High School in Catawba County has named Wayne Hicks as its new head football coach, according to various media reports including the Hickory Daily Record.
Hicks has been the defensive coordinator at Hickory High for the last five seasons and prior to that was head football coach at Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory from 2002 through 2006.
He is a graduate of Jacksonville State University with a master’s from Eastern Kentucky. He had a coaching stint at the high school level in Florida before moving into the college ranks. Hicks was an assistant coach at Elon and North Carolina A&T.
Hicks replaces Chris Bunting, who resigned after just one year at the helm to take a job as an assistant coach in South Carolina at Clover High School.
