Tom Harper of Hickory High School has taken a new position just down the road, resigning after one year at the Red Tornado helm to become the new head football coach at Fred T. Foard in Catawba County, according to various media reports.
Harper was head coach at Hickory for the 2013 season, replacing John Worley who had retired, and Hickory posted an 8-5 record. Prior to that Harper was the head coach at Alexander Central for five years.
The new Foard coach will replace Jason Phelps, who resigned after two years at the helm of the Tigers. A graduate of Catawba College, Harper has also coached at East Burke.
