NEWLAND—Avery County High School has named Jason Phelps as its new head football coach for the coming season.

      Phelps has been the defensive coordinator for the last two years at Bunker Hill, and prior to that was the head coach at Fred T. Foard High School in Catawba County for two seasons.

      He has also served as head coach at Bartlett Yancey. Phelps is a 1992 graduate of Watauga High School.

      He will replace Darrell Brewer, who resigned as the Avery coach last month after 11 seasons at the helm.
