Brevard’s Cloer Wins Third Straight 2-A Singles Title

CARY—Top-seeded Britney Cloer of Brevard won her third consecutive singles championship on Saturday afternoon in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 2-A women’s tennis championships at the Cary Tennis Center.

In the championship match, Cloer defeated Wilkes Central’s Emily Mathis 6-2, 6-1 in a battle of champions from the last four years. Mathis won the 2002 2-A singles crown and Cloer has earned the last three titles. The Brevard standout has been dominant in the finals, as she lost only 10 games in six sets in her NCHSAA championship appearances over the last three years.

Cloer shut out fourth-seeded Nancy Reilly of Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons in straight sets at love in a morning semifinal. while Mathis of Wilkes Central eliminated North Rowan’s Allie Mills in the other semifinal.

Hollyn Alberghini and Emily Morton of West Stanly, the number-three seeds, downed fourth-seeded Christi Murphy and Ashley Harrell of Greene Central for the doubles championship by a 6-0, 6-4 count.

All four of the top seeds in doubles had marched into the morning semifinals, but the top two seeds were upended in the semis, with Greene Central’s top-seeded pair of Meredith Rouse and Brittany Horton falling to Alberghini and Morton while the second-seeded Shelby team of Betsy Martin and Erin Mode was ousted by Murphy and Harrell.

Wendy’s and Ford are the presenting sponsors of the NCHSAA sports program.
