CARDINAL GIBBONS EDGES LEDFORD IN NCHSAA 2-A GOLF
SOUTHERN PINES – Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons held off defending champion
Ledford to win the 23rd annual North Carolina High School Athletic
Association state 2-A men’s golf championships by a single shot at the
Longleaf Golf and Country Club on Tuesday.
It was a reversal of last year’s results where Ledford won the state
title and Cardinal Gibbons finished second. Gibbons held a three-shot
advantage over Ledford and West Henderson entering Tuesday’s play.
Cardinal Gibbons shot a 597 to edge Ledford by a shot, while West
Henderson was back in third at 618.
Ryan Lavelle of Gibbons helped his team to victory by winning individual
medalist honors, firing a two-under par for the tournament with a brilliant
33 on the back nine Tuesday for a 36-hole total of 140. That was four shots
ahead of second-place finisher Jay Brown of Mayodan Dalton McMichael.
South Iredell’s Clay Brown was third at 147, and Ledford teammates Jeff
Boyan and Curtis Brotherton tied for fourth at 148.
Playing conditions were much improved on Tuesday after a chilly,
blustery opening day on the par 71, 6,543-yard layout.
Prior to 1986, all NCHSAA schools competed for a single title in an open
tournament. Play went to three classifications in 1986 and then to four
classes beginning with the 1998 tournaments.
A total of 84 golfers competed in the two-day tournament. Wendy’s and
the Carolinas Ford Dealers are the presenting sponsors of the NCHSAA sports
program.
