Cary legend, Guy Mendenhall, passes away at 84

CARY, NC – Guy Mendenhall, a legendary teacher, coach, and athletic director at Cary High School, passed away on Monday night, September 20, 2020, at 84. Mendenhall was an ardent supporter of high school athletics, particularly at his alma mater, Cary. 

Mendenhall was a successful athletic administrator, teacher, coach, and athlete. During his senior season in 1954, the Imps won the Class A state championship. He was teammates with former NCHSAA Executive Director, the late Charlie Adams, and the two were coached by another former NCHSAA Executive Director, Simon Terrell.

Mendenhall had a long career in education, teaching, and coaching at Enloe before coming back to Cary to become the school’s athletic director. He retired from the position in 1997 but remained involved in the school and athletics programs well after his retirement. 

He was one of the Cary High School Sports Hall of Fame charter members in 1994 and was inducted into the NC Athletic Directors Association Hall of Fame in 2011.

Montlawn Memorial Park Funerals & Cremations is handling arrangements for the family. A graveside service is planned for 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 25, 2020, at Montlawn Memorial Park in Raleigh.
