1-A WOMEN’S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS
FRESHMAN MCGEE WINS NCHSAA STATE 1-A WOMEN’S SINGLES CROWN
RALEIGH — Freshman Danielle McGee of Hampstead Topsail captured the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 1-A women’s singles championship on Saturday with a straight-set victory over Mount Airy’s Maggie McKee.
McGee beat McKee 6-2 and 7-5 in the morning championship at N.C. State University.
Last year’s state doubles runners-up earned the top spot this time, as Jessie Elmore and Brianna Fulp of East Wilkes took the championship over Caitlen Corbett and Molly Peele of Misenheimer Gray Stone Day, 6-3, 6-2.
Both the singles and the doubles finalists had won a pair of matches on Friday to advance to the championship.

SALISBURY DUOS MEET FOR DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP
RALEIGH – It was a battle of Salisbury High School teammates for the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 2-A women’s doubles championship on Saturday at N.C. State University.
Hannah Lebowitz and Kirstin Meyerhoeffer of Salisbury downed teammates Shea Comadoll and Joy Loeblein 6-0, 6-1 in the finals. Lebowitz and Meyerhoeffer had also beaten their Salisbury counterparts in the Midwest Regional championship last week, although both qualified for the state event.
Lauren Brooker of Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons earned the singles crown, downing Amie Cloer of West Henderson 6-1, 6-3.

LAKE NORMAN’S TALBERT WINS SINGLES,
T.C. ROBERSON PAIR TAKES DOUBLES
HIGH POINT – Lake Norman’s Kathryn Talbert won the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A women’s singles tennis championship on Saturday at Oak Hollow Tennis Center.
Talbert defeated Neena Wanko of Cameron Union Pines in the championship match by a conafter ousting Southeast Guilford freshman standout Brooke McAmis in the morning semifinals.
The T.C. Roberson pair of Lauren Vaughn and Shannon Melrose defeated Jamestown Ragsdale’s Catherine Wood and Sruthi Cherkur for the state doubles crown by a 6-2, 6-3 count.
Wood and Cherkur had advanced with a morning semifinal victory over another T.C. Roberson team, Erin Williams and Elle Klein, 6-4, 7-6 (6). The Williams-Klein duo had won the West Regional last week while the eventual state champions actually placed third in their regional.

MYERS PARK’S BAKER WINS NCHSAA 4-A SINGLES TITLE;
HOGGARD PAIR TAKES DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP
RALEIGH – Charlotte Myers Park’s Grace Baker completed her march through the field by winning the singles championship on Saturday in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A women’s tennis championships at N.C. State.
Baker, who won the West Regional championship last week, defeated Mideast champ Jennifer Huang of East Chapel Hill for the state crown, 6-2, 6-2.
Baker had won all three of her Friday matches in straight sets and lost only five games in six sets.
The Wilmington Hoggard doubles pair of Kaitlin Burns and Maggie Dickens earned the state championship with a 6-1, 7-6(5) victory over Katie Kane and Asha Iyengar of Raleigh Broughton.
Burns and Dickens were down 2-5 in the second set but rallied to tie and then won the tiebreaker 7-5 to clinch the crown.
