Cherokee Names New Head Football Coach

CHEROKEE—Cherokee High School has named Kent Briggs as its new head football coach, according to a report in the Asheville Citizen-Times.

Briggs is a former head coach at Western Carolina University, where the Catamounts went 22-43 during his seasons at WCU. Since leaving Western he has been an assistant coach on the staff at Smoky Mountain.

Briggs will take over for Kiah Smith, whose team posted a record of 0-11 in his only season at the Cherokee helm. The Braves currently have a 13-game losing streak, dating back to 2012, and have won just one game in the Smoky Mountain Conference in the last four seasons.

The report also indicated that Craig Barker, a former Cherokee coach, will serve as the new defensive coordinator.
