PINEHURST, NC – The North Carolina High School Athletic Association began the 2019 Women’s Golf State Championships on Monday, October 28 at three courses in the Sandhills area. Play will continue with the final round tomorrow.
1A/2A Championship is being conducted at Longleaf Golf and Family Club, 3A at Foxfire Resort’s Red Fox Course and 4A at Pinehurst No. 5. Final round play is scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m. for 3A and 4A competitors while the 1A/2A Championships will tee off at 9:00 a.m.

1A/2A Day 1 Recap – First Flight’s Schuster leads looking for third straight state title; Oak Grove & Mount Pleasant tied at +47 in the hunt for team honors
Katherine Schuster from First Flight High School is in front after the first 18 holes at Longleaf Golf and Family Club, carding a 2-over, 74, in round one. The two-time defending NCHSAA 1A/2A Individual State Champion started off her day with a double bogey on her opening hole, the par 4, 10th, before rebounding for five straight pars and a birdie on the par 4, 16th. Schuster got off to a rocky start on the front nine as well, rolling in a pair of bogeys to open that side before leveling out with six more pars and a confidence boosting birdie to close her round on the par 4, 9th hole. Hayesville’s Logan Madison is just two shots back of Schuster after a 4-over, 76, with Maci Beaver just three shots off the pace after a 5-over, 77. Mount Pleasant and Oak Grove are tied for the team lead at 47-over.
3A Day 1 Recap – Cox Mill’s Lohbauer dominant in opening round; Cox Mill leading four-time defending champs Rockingham County for team title
Elizabeth Lohbauer is leading the field by two strokes after one day of play at Foxfire Resort and Golf Club’s Red Fox Course. Lohbauer’s 1-over, 73, has her Cox Mill Chargers in front of the team competition by three shots over the four-time defending State 3A Champions from Rockingham County. Lohbauer opened her morning with a trio of pars before dumping in two straight birdies on the par 4, 4th, and par 3, 5th. However, the red numbers were short-lived, with Lohbauer giving back two shots fall to even-par with a double bogey on the par 4, 6th. She remained steady until a bogey on the par 3, 17th. Lohbauer leads Hailey Pendleton from Weddington by two shots and Emily Mathews of Eastern Alamance by four strokes.
4A Day 1 Recap – Pinecrest pair go low to put the Patriots in front of the team and individual competitions
Seniors Mara Hirtle and Jaclyn Kenzel from Pinecrest posted red numbers on day 1 of the NCHSAA 4A State Championships at Pinehurst No. 5. Hirtle carded a 2-under, 70, to take the overnight lead, one stroke ahead of her teammate, Kenzel, who carded a 1-under, 71. Hirtle had a pair of birdies on both the front and back nines. She came alive after an up-and-down stretch through the 5th, 6th, and 7th holes that saw her card bogey, birdie, bogey, to finish with nine pars and two more birdies. Kenzel was more steady, with a pair of birdies and a single bogey on the day. The pair combined to push the Patriots to the day one team lead, with an 8-over, 224, combined team score, eight shots ahead of New Bern and nine in front of Cardinal Gibbons.
