This Day In NCHSAA History

March 12, 2000

On this day in history in the NCHSAA, North Carolina High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame member Thell Overman passed away at the age of 83. Overman was highly successful as a head football coach at Wallace and then Wallace-Rose Hill until his retirement in 1979.

March 12, 1977

On this day in history in the NCHSAA, it was the first and last time two teams from the same town competed for the state title. Future NBA standout “Sleepy” Floyd led Hunter Huss over future Tar Heel and NBA star James Worthy and Ashbrook 60-59 for the 4-A crown. Ashbrook had beaten their Gastonia rival four times over the course of the season before losing in the title game.
