On this day in history in the NCHSAA, Dr. Wiley Thurber “Army” Armstrong died in Rocky Mount at the age of 76. For many years Dr. Armstrong was the head of the North Carolina High School Athletic Conference (NCHSAC), the organization that supervised championships for the black high schools in North Carolina before integration. Dr. Armstrong is a member of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame.
