            On this day on history in the NCHSAA, Southport captured the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state eight-man football championship with a 40-13 victory over Tar Heel in a game played in Whiteville.

            On this day in history in the NCHSAA, Cardinal Gibbons built up a huge 50-14 halftime lead over Gray's Creek in a first-round state playoff football game and then withstood a tremendous rally to take a 57-52 victory.  The two teams combined for well over 1,000 yards in total offense, with Gray's Creek rushing for 436, led by Ken McDowell's 254 yards. Shawn Stankavage of Gibbons threw for four touchdowns and ran for two– in the first half.
