Deadlocks In Individual, Team Standings Highlight NCHSAA 4-A Women’s Golf

PINEHURST — Ties for the lead were the order of the day on Monday after the opening round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A women’s golf championships at Pinehurst number five.

Three golfers share the individual lead entering Tuesday’s final day of the 36-hole event while Charlotte Myers Park and Asheville A.C. Reynolds are knotted in the team standings.

Julia Strandberg, a junior at Greensboro Page, along with Morrisville Green Hope senior Colleen Estes and Charlotte Myers Park junior Virginia Mayer all shot even-par 72. Stephanie Wagstaff of Asheville A.C. Reynolds is alone in fourth at 74.

Defending individual champion Julia Saleeby of Raleigh Broughton is in a four-way tie for eighth with a 79.

Trailing the co-leaders in the team standings is Greensboro Page at 164, seven shots back, while Gastonia Ashbrook is at 165 and three teams, including defending champ Raleigh Leesville Road, are knotted at 166.

The best two scores of a team count toward the team totals, and a total of 78 golfers and 25 teams are competing in the event.

Play is scheduled to get underway at 7:30 on Tuesday morning on the 5,709-yard layout. Wendy’s and the Carolinas Ford Dealers are the presenting sponsors of the NCHSAA sports program.
