D.H. Conley, North Duplin Each Battle Back To Force Third Games in Softball Series

CLASS 4-A SOFTBALL, GAME TWO

WEIDNER PITCHES SHUTOUT FOR CONLEY TO EVEN SERIES WITH NORTH DAVIDSON
      RALEIGH— Senior pitcher Rachel Weidner hurled a two-hit shutout on Saturday afternoon as D.H. Conley beat North Davidson 5-0 in the second game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A softball championship series at Dail Softball Stadium at North Carolina State University.
     That evened the best-of-three series at a game apiece.  North Davidson scored three unearned runs Friday night en route to a 3-2 victory in the series opener. Game three is set for Saturday at 5 p.m.
     Madison Maloney and Emily Kirby each had two hits for the winners. Gray Barrow’s two-run single for the Vikings plated two key runs in the third as Conley opened up a 4-0 lead.  A couple of errors and a passed ball resulted in the fifth run.
     D.H. Conley is in the finals for the third time in the last five years and has previous crowns in 2011 and ’13.  The Vikings are 26-3 overall while North Davidson, back in the championships for the first time since 2011, is now 26-6.

CLASS 1-A SOFTBALL, GAME TWO
NORTH DUPLIN EVENS 1-A SOFTBALL SERIES WITH HIWASSEE DAM

    GREENSBORO—Sophomore pitcher Haley Brogden used both her arm and her bat  on Saturday afternoon to lead North Duplin to a 2-1 decision over Hiwassee Dam in the second game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 1-A softball championship series at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
    The series is evened at a game apiece. Hiwassee Dam won the opening game Friday night 7-0 behind a one-hit shutout by Haylie Shope. Game three is scheduled for 5 p.m. Saturday 
     Brogden was the winning pitcher, going the distance and allowing just two hits while striking out nine.  She also had two hits, including a run-scoring single in the sixth that drove home the decisive run. 
    Both teams are in their initial appearance in an NCHSAA state softball championship. Hiwassee Dam is 25-4 overall and North Duplin improved  to 19-4-1.
