Durham County Stadium Will Honor Willie Bradshaw

DURHAM—The Durham County commissioners have unanimously approved honoring the late Willie Bradshaw at Durham County Memorial Stadium, according to a story in the Durham Herald-Sun.

The commissioners have voted to name the field, the scoreboard and a wall inside the facility for the legendary coach and athletic administrator.  Bradshaw, who was a long-time coach at Durham Hillside, is a member of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame and the National High School Hall of Fame. He was also active in the North Carolina Coaches Associaton and the North Carolina Athletic Directors Association.

Two plaques will be placed in the stadium.  One, in memory of Bradshaw, will have information about his life and accomplishments, while the other will explain the historical context of the word “Memorial” in the stadium’s name, including that it was named in honor of the veterans of World Wars I and II.

Originally there was discussion about naming the stadium after Bradshaw, but that changed after the facility’s authority and veteran organizations outlined the history of the facility bearing that name.
