ASHEVILLE—Clyde Erwin High School has announced its next class of inductees to the school’s athletic Hall of Fame, according to a press release from the school.
The induction ceremony will be held between the varsity basketball games at Erwin tonight.
The inductees include Riley Brown, Robbie Nallenweg, Jim Penland, Tim Sluder and Joni Carter Wellmon. Here is some additional information about each inductee:
Riley Brown – Class of 1964 – Football, Basketball & Track: Named All Buncombe County, All Conference and All Western North Carolina in Football in 1963…rushed for 1299 yards and 15 touchdowns in 1963 and went on to play football at Western Carolina University in 1964 and 1965…served in U. S. Marine Corps from 1966-68…recipient of Purple Heart and Bronze Star with a “V” designation for Heroism in Combat during tour of duty in Vietnam.
Robbie Nallenweg – Class of 2009 – Football, Basketball & Tennis: Led western North Carolina with 2731 yards passing and 25 TD passes in senior year…named All Conference in football, member of conference champion basketball team and member of tennis team as senior…played collegiate football at Wingate University, named South Atlantic Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2012 and 2013, SAC All Conference and Team MVP in 2013.
Jim Penland – Community Leader: Charter Member of Erwin Youth League, served on EYL Board of Directors…served as Commissioner of Baseball and coached 3 sports in EYL..served as N.C. State Commissioner and South East Regional Commissioner and on the Board of Directors for Babe Ruth Baseball International…served as assistant basketball coach at Erwin Middle School, served as football chain crew member and as basketball clock operator for Erwin High School.
Tim Sluder – Class of 1980 – Football, Basketball & Baseball: Earned All Conference honors in football in 1978 and 1979…Buncombe County Back of the Year in 1979, scoring 16 TD’s and getting nine interceptions in that season…helped lead 1979 football team and 1980 baseball teams to Mountain Athletic Conference championships..led 1980 baseball team in runs scored, homeruns and stolen bases and named All Conference in that sport…played collegiate football at Western Carolina University in 1980 and 1981.
Joni Carter Wellmon – Class of 1998 – Volleyball, Basketball & Softball: Named All Conference and team MVP in Volleyball, Basketball & Softball during Senior Year…paced basketball team to Western Athletic Conference championship…played collegiate softball at Gardner-Webb University…named to South Atlantic Conference Academic Honor Roll and All Sports Team…led her 2002 collegiate team to a runner-up finish in the NCCAA national tournament.
