2013 1-A WOMEN’S TENNIS

CARY— This year’s championship doubles match in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 1-A women’s tennis championships will be a rematch of last year’s final after Friday’s action at the Cary Tennis Center.

Libby Fowler and Brooke Herlocker of Misenheimer Gray Stone Day will take on the Mount Airy duo of Davi Barbour and Haley Thomas in the championship after both teams won twice on the opening day.

Fowler and Herlocker won last year’s state final by a score of 6-1, 6-0, but Barbour and Thomas topped the Gray Stone team in last week’s regional championship, 6-3, 6-3.

The singles championship will be an all-Community School of Davidson affair, with Marisa Deininger taking on teammate Courtney Mudge.  Mudge won three of her four sets at love on Friday.

In the opening round of play, all eight Western representatives defeated all eight of their opponents from the East, including the Mount Airy doubles team of Bree Hughes and Carley Vanhoy.  The number-four team out of the West beat the East’s top pair of Sara Modlin and McKenzie Mixon of Riverside (Martin) in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.

Action is scheduled to start at nine o’clock Saturday morning.
